Yesterday, I took a day off and decided to slow down for a change.
It hasn’t been that long since summer vacation ended, but work has been hectic ever since, and I’ve been feeling restless. I needed a reset.
The day started with my usual training session at the gym, followed by some errands at home. In the afternoon, I headed out to see the Eva & Jan Švankmajer exhibition. The gallery was small, yet filled with an impressive number of works, and to my surprise, it was crowded even on a weekday. Sculptures, paintings, photographs—there was so much to take in. I stayed for about an hour and left with two books in hand.
In the back, there was a permanent collection, and one particular doll caught my eye. I asked the staff about it, and sure enough, it turned out to be by a Japanese artist who had been deeply influenced by Hans Bellmer. Since I already knew Bellmer’s work, the staff and I ended up having a really fun conversation. It even brought back memories of reading Tatsuhiko Shibusawa and Pauline Réage—so nostalgic!
After that, I visited Tokyo’s only museum dedicated to photography to see the Luigi Ghirri exhibition. I don’t usually go out of my way to see other photographers’ work, but his had always intrigued me. And I’m glad I went—it was brilliant. Alongside his film photographs, there were also Polaroids and collages, offering a glimpse into the different ways he explored photographic expression. Truly inspiring.
In the same museum, there was also a special exhibition called Transphysical, celebrating the museum’s 30th anniversary. The show felt like a journey through the history of photographic expression itself, and it was absolutely worth seeing.
It turned into a day completely immersed in art—and I loved it. Sometimes you really do need this kind of time for yourself, just to keep your mind in balance. This Sunday, I’ll be heading to another museum for a different exhibition, and I’m already looking forward to it!
